I’ve come across a suggestion that both P&O and Cunard are asking some passengers, via a confidential survey, for their opinions on fare options. As regular readers will be aware, the current structure with Vantage and Getaway fares has attracted a lot of critical comment. I’ve published one or two mildly critical posts about this, and picked up comments that were much more so.

The suggestion that passengers are being asked to comment on is a three-way fare structure with the following features:

  1. The full brochure fare. Under this a passenger would book a specific cabin; would have guaranteed dining arrangements;  would have the highest priority for upgrades; and would pay the same sort of deposit as now;
  2. A slightly discounted fare. This would enable the passenger to choose the cabin grade and broad location (by deck? fore/aft, high/low? – it’s not clear), but not be given a specific cabin on booking; a lower priority for dining arrangements, so they might not get the dining arrangement they wanted; a lower priority for upgrades; and would require a higher deposit but not full payment when booking;
  3. A more highly discounted fare, available no more than three months before the cruise (if at all). This would be similar to the present Getaway fare: choice of cabin grade but not location, no choice of dining arrangements, and full payment at the time of deposit.

As it stands some of the features here are quite like some of things I suggested in this post, so I shall pat myself on the back – I’m sure that Messrs Dingle and Tempest are regular readers and got the idea from me! (Or perhaps not….). I don’t have any information as to what would happen to the much-ridiculed ‘Price Promise’.

The more I think about this, the more I wish they would do it the way it’s done in the US: “here’s a price; if we lower it we’ll compensate you in some way or other, but we may not lower it and in any case, not by much”. That way passengers know where they stand – none of this stress of wondering which fare they should go for. How about it, Mr Dingle and Mr Tempest? – you have a platform here if you want to use it.

    The bottom line is, the ‘die-hards’ will ALWAYS want to book on day one, the minute the brochure comes out.They MUST get their cruise booked immediately and secure their favourite cabin and dining time, and are happy to pay full price to do so. They are not remotely interested in waiting for a late deal. Fine. But the problem is, they don’t then want anyone who does wait and take a gamble to be able to get a cheaper price than them! They can’t have it both ways!! But, unfortunately, they have been so pampered and pandered to by P&O, that they think they can. Their constant carping was what caused P&O to bring in the Vantage/Getaway fares in the first place – to introduce disparity in the booking conditions – thinking that this would appease them. But instead they have just complained even more than before!

      Well, that’s fighting talk Louisa – you’re commenting on the blog of someone who does indeed usually book pretty much when the brochures are released.

      To be fair, you do make good points – it does seem that some people want the best of all worlds. In our case it’s because of work – we have to get our holidays arranged as early as possible so that we can present them as fait accompli to our employers. Especially so in Val’s case – she is project-based, with each project lasting at least nine months, and she needs to be able to tell the project manager what her commitments are whenever she joins a project. It would be very difficult indeed for her to get agreement for a significant period of new absence during a project. So we understand the position we’re in and accept that there are costs. And we also rcognise that we are fortunate in both still being in employment at this stage of our lives.

      All that said, we are only human and it does hurt a little when some blithering idiot insists on telling us how little they paid for their cruise; and then half suggests that only fools pay the full whack….
