Costa Concordia update

I gather that the go-ahead to start the ‘parbuckling’ of Costa Concordia – that is, the operation to bring her back upright – has been given the go-ahead by the Italian authorities, and may have been tentatively scheduled to start next Monday (16 September). Here’s a link to the website that describes the operation and here’s a link to a webcam showing Costa Concordia; you can see the forward caisson that has been attached on her port side.

As for the trial of Captain Schettino, well there has been no update since July. That was when the co-defendants made successful plea-bargains with the authorities, as a result of which they received short sentences which I gather they may not serve. Here’s a link to a summary of the position. Proceedings against Captain Schettino are due to recommence sometime in September.

I shall be looking forward to seeing what we see next week, assuming the parbuckling goes ahead (and is successful, of course). However I shall be away on holiday – not on a cruise – so I may or may not be able to post anything.

I too am very interested in the ‘parbuckling’ of Costa Concordia and I too will be on holiday but unlike yourself I’ll be on a cruise ๐Ÿ™‚ More specifically N324 so we shall be sailing near her (relatively) in just over a week on our way from Monte Carlo to Civitavecchia (late change of port from Livorno) The chances of seeing her are pretty much nil but the last time I did see her was 5 years ago in port and took photos of the crew on the bridge holding up a large yellow smiley faced paddle :-S

Hope you have a good time on your holiday.

Enjoy the cruise, Gary. Looks like a very similar itinerary to the one we did in June – you have Cartagena instead of Valancia, and in the event we went to Vigo instead of La Coruna because of the weather. Have you been to Ajaccio? – although we just stayed around the town, we thought that the surrounding countryside looked very beautiful.

Slightly off the main topic but with 1 wedding (sons) 2 birthdays and 7 new cruisers I’m sure we’ll enjoy it thanks, though 4 of us are staying on for N325 for a relaxing cruise ๐Ÿ˜‰

We’ve not been to Cartagena (wind stopped us last time) nor have we been to Ajaccio and we’re looking forward to it though we don’t know what to do yet!
