More on Azipods

I mentioned in this post earlier this week that if there was a problem with a pod then the ship had to go into drydock so the pod could be worked on. It turns out that the latest design of pod – the Azipod XO series from ABB – mitigate this to some extent: it seems  to be possible to get into the pod (presumably via an access point in the hull/pod mounting system) and then work on the pod mechanics. Here’s a link to a pdf on the ABB website that shows some diagrams of the XO series, including one showing a person in the pod. I hadn’t realised just how massive these components are.

Although QV does have Azipods (which are a particular design from a particular company, specifically ABB) they are unfortunately from an older series. QV was finished before the XO series became available.
